The importance of career management

- By definition career management is taking deliberate steps in order to ensure long term career success. Often times for administrative support professionals, we are working to help ensure, the success of those we support at the neglect of our own career aspirations. This doesn't have to be the case. Instead, we can help those we support achieve their goals, while ensuring we are taking control of our professional future. Career management is important for the following reasons. First, taking control over your career. This is not up to your employer. It is helpful if they provide tools that can aid you as you move forward, but the ultimate responsibility rests with you individually. When you take charge in this area, you can move in the direction of your vision, and not one that is imposed upon you. We have all found ourselves in jobs that may not have been a good match for any number of reasons. However, there is always something to learn, and you can use that assignment to propel you to the the next opportunity by using it as a stepping stone instead of a roadblock. Next, attaining career satisfaction. As you begin to develop professionally and determine your career goals, you will feel more optimistic about your future and how you will get there. If you plan to stay with your present employer, you may be trying to excel in your present assignment as you know this will help you to reach the next step. Work begins to take on new meaning and you feel more fulfilled in your daily responsibilities. When you don't feel valued in your work, or you don't know how to move ahead, you become frustrated, and that can lead to negativity. This would lead to dissatisfaction, which is not good for you as an employee nor for the employer you are working for. Finally, ability to assess your own professional development needs. Your skills in this area of management, goal setting, strategy, and personal branding, will all be highly developed during your career planning process. In addition, you will more than likely need to attend training classes, pursue educational opportunities, and gain knowledge in areas that will strengthen your resume and prepare you for advanced levels within your current profession, or a new one that you want to obtain. Managing your career is a gift you give to yourself, that will pay off exponentially in the years to come. You must make this a priority for yourself, and commit to seeing it through.
