The biggest challenge in the first place is not being able to jump to solutions. Most people they normally hear something, and they’re wanting to help by providing you with options and solutions relatively quickly. One of the things I would encourage you to do is listen, and not trying to jump to those elements too early. If you have got great ideas put them in the back of your book. They’re probably great ideas but let’s make sure that we’re getting the right information to make sure that that idea can then stand up to all the other information you come up with. Couple of the other frustrations and challenges is the time frame in which you’re actually being asked to collect all this information.
Requirements come in many different forms. We’ve got everything from business requirements, stakeholder requirements, functional system, nonfunctional, transition requirements. It’s like anything if we don’t get the right information and the right level of detail it’s very hard for the people who’re trying to create the solution to truly understand what it is we’re doing. There’s not a lot of times where you can actually stand over the top of someone and say no that’s not what I want, this is what I want. We actually have to make sure that we use documentation, and good quality documentation to be able to take what we’ve received to be able to put it into a package, and then for the people who are actually creating the solutions and outcomes to use that package effectively.
As we know, someone could read something and it can be read in many different ways. What you really need to do is make sure it’s read in one way and understood by many. The problem with most is that we try and spend too much time talking in technical speak, when in fact we should actually be writing out information as if our grandmother can understand it. Why, that actually reduces the assumptions that are being made in organizations, and within the solutions which means you’re going to get a far greater chance of having a better quality outcome by understanding everyone understands what’s going on.
