The flexible job market and who's building flexible careers

- Over the last 10 years, flexible work options have just exploded. Whether it's working from home, freelancing, or having a flexible schedule, more professionals have control over when, where, and how they work. Why is that? In large part it's thanks to technology that allows people to work whenever, wherever. At first, this technology was used largely by employers to have office-bound workers check email or get work done at night and on the weekends. But the trend has evolved into formalized policies that give us a say in that process too. In 2007, about 9% of US workers worked from home occasionally. Today, 43%. In 2007, 25% of workers said they had access to flexible scheduling or flexible work hours. Today, 64%. The availability of high-speed internet and less expensive, more powerful computers and devices have also fueled the rise in freelance work.
