It's one thing to work for a manager you feel lacks competence. It's another thing altogether to work for one who is mean or inappropriate. The good news is that most of them don't last. Because even companies with weak performance cultures typically self correct and get rid of the mean bosses, most of the time. But for some of you we should talk about how to deal with the situation. There really are two categories of negative or inappropriate managers. Those who are merely annoying and awkward, and those who break policies, laws, or otherwise make you feel truly horrible about coming to work. Let's deal with this latter case first and get it out of the way. If your boss likes to cuss, or make inappropriate comments, or demean you in private or in public, or if they act in a violent manner, these behaviors are unacceptable.
