- I was running a training course recently,…and one of the delegates asked me,…when should they confess to the customer…that their project's probably going to be late?…Should you confess as soon as you know there's a problem?…Should you wait until you're pretty sure…you're not going to be able to catch it up?…Or should you leave it until the absolute last minute,…in the hope that some sort of solution…is going to crop up?…And I would say the answer is,…you have to reschedule in the middle third of your project.…If you reschedule in the first third,…that's giving up too soon,…and you're troubling the customer with something…they probably don't need to worry about.…
If you leave it until the last third,…you've left it too late,…and the customer's going to be pretty unhappy,…because there probably were things…that they could have done about it,…if they'd known earlier.…So somewhere around the middle of your project,…you need to take a view,…and if you think there's a significant chance…that you're going to end up delivering late,…
