What is rights-of-publicity law?

There's a fairly new area of intellectual property law that we call rights of publicity law. Many people have never even heard of it but intuitively, it will make sense. The idea is that there's a law that protects an individual's right to exploit their, their face, their voice, their persona, and to prevent other people from taking pictures of them and monetizing those without their permission, for example. We call this rights of publicity law. Every state has their own rights of publicity law. In fact, not all states in the United States have adopted a right of publicity statute, but most have. So, what is the idea behind a right of publicity? The idea is that, if you're well known, you ought to be able to endorse products with your likeness, your voice, your signature, your name, and sponsor those things. To be paid to tell people that you endorse a product.
