What is networking and why does it matter?

- We all have people we know and trust. When we reach out to these people for help and they reach out to us, we're leveraging our connections to achieve our goals, or networking. Networking is the practice of building mutually beneficial relationships with the people we know so that we can increase access. It's about connections you have that can be activated and that provide you access that you otherwise wouldn't get, access to inside information like hearing about a job that's opening up before it's publicized, or access to a person like an introduction to a prospective client, or access to an event like an invitation to an exclusive conference. Sometimes networking gets a bad rap, but usually that's because people don't understand what networking is all about. Networking isn't passing out a handful of business cards to everyone in the room or someone pushing his way toward the most powerful person at the party to introduce himself, or the guy who does you a random, unsolicited…
