What makes a good survey?

- Surveys are a lot like a hammer. They're a really effective tool when used properly. A hammer is great for driving a nail, but not so good with screws. We have screwdrivers for screws, hammers for nails, and surveys for quantifiable information. Surveys are often misused in early stages of building a product. Because they can be made quickly and cheaply, startups use them to collect customer information. But if a survey is improperly designed and used, the resulting data can be misleading or completely worthless. Before you create a survey, you should ask yourself what questions you want answered to figure out whether or not a survey is truly the right tool for the job. Surveys are great for three things. The first is measuring attitude, intent, or task success. How does the user feel about this? How important is this to the user? And how successful is the user at completing this task? Next is tracking changes over time. What were the user's attitudes before the feature launch? And…
