Understanding your manager's motivations

To be an effective professional, you don't have to be a world class psychologist. You do, however, want to hone your people skills. Using logic and observation, you can learn to understand others better. Here's a great place to start. Think about what it is that motivates others. There are many things that might drive one's behaviors: the need for attention, a desire for control, a love of helping others, a need for achievement, or a longing to belong. I want you to think about your immediate supervisor as we briefly consider several common types of internal motivation. Think about how they've behaved in the office over the last six to 12 months. Think about their average or typical behavior. As we walk through these motivations, don't think about them as good or bad, per se. They can all be healthy, within limits. Okay.
