- Before your organization can implement portfolio management, it must decide where it will start, how it will go about the roll out, and how it's going to measure progress. The first step to implement portfolio management is to understand your current situation. You already do some of the things involved in portfolio management. You execute projects and conduct some form of project planning and selection, for example. You may not be doing these in the way you want but they are happening. Other aspects of portfolio management will be completely new to you. Do you start by improving what you already do? Or is the first step to add something that isn't being done, yet?
