- Transition, to change or move. We hear about important job transitions or family transitions. Speech transitions are just as important. You decided on the topic. You decided what your key points will be, and the order in which you're going to present those. Makes perfect sense to you, but your listeners weren't in your mind as you transitioned from one key point to the next. So now you're ready to add those transitions. The listener will, of course, have a general idea of how your ideas relate because of your thesis statement which encompassed those key ideas, but that's not enough. Every relationship throughout the speech must be clear and smooth to the listener. As the speaker, your responsibility is to let the audience know when you are changing topics or moving from one point to another. Why? Believe it or not, your listeners probably aren't as interested in your topic as you are. And add to that, we are terrible listeners. Some studies show the average attention span for adults…
