- Torts, torts, torts. Now, I'm not talking about a torte or anything your grandma cooked. I'm talking about a specific legal term that can mean civil liability for a company relating to an employee. Now, before we break down how this concept affects a company, let's break down the definition of a tort. A tort is a civil wrong for which a remedy may be obtained, usually in the form of damages. This can include injury in the following ways: slip-and-fall accidents, medical and legal malpractice, assault, motor vehicle accidents, product liability injuries, and the one that could affect you or a member of the group you manage, workplace accidents. Tort claims are filed in civil court as opposed to criminal. Usually the focus is to make the injured party whole unlike a criminal case where the focus is to punish the offender.
