- [Narrator] We all do better when we feel like we have an accepted place and role on our team. When you're an older member of a mostly younger team, it's easy to feel isolated, a bit insecure, and often, like you're an outsider. It can also feel awkward taking direction from someone younger. As a result, even if they want to do a good job, your report could come across as hesitant, cautious, or defensive. Help them feel more at ease, more open, and more trusting by using the following four communication strategies. These four techniques are designed to keep your conversations neutral and non-judgmental when you get into conflicting situations. They'll help build rapport between you and your older report by sending the signal that they can express themselves freely. Using open-ended questions instead of direct questions is the first strategy.
