- When it's time for your leader to take action toward their development goals, I've learned that which actions they take and how you support their progress can make all the difference. Let me share four guiding principles. First, progress motivates action. Massive research initially done by Teresa Amabile at Harvard and Steven Kramer shows the number one motivator for people in professional life is making progress on meaningful work. So, it's crucial to help your leader take actions that drive progress early and often, especially at the beginning. Help them gain some wins, even small wins, to bolster their confidence. Help them start seeing that positive change is possible and if they keep it up, they'll get to where they want to be. Now, that leads to a second principle. Small steps lead to big progress. Encourage your leader to include steps that are easily doable and repeatable. As they master those, over time, you can add more steps and more complexity. But your leader's actions…
