Success in retail

- [Narrator] Welcome to the unique and exciting world of retail. Whether it's your lifelong passion or just a way to collect a paycheck, one of the most important things you need to recognize is that in retail we touch people every single day. Now, if you're welcoming the customer, that doesn't mean you give them a hug. But we touch them through our actions in the way we make them feel. The first great secret to success in retail and in any job, is to be dependable, to show up when people actually expect you to show up. You know the feeling when somebody just decides not to show up? Yeah, not cool. And I know life happens. Sweet, unexpected parties pop up. There's almost always a reason to take a day off, but your dependability sticks to your reputation. There's a quote on the wall of my gym that says, how you do anything is how you do everything. Translation, don't slack off. You're forming bad habits. And pretty soon those bad habits are going to show up. Be a dependable type of person. People will love you for it. Your dependability also has an impact on your relationship with your co-workers. Can they count on you? Are you helpful during a busy shift, or are you that person who is conveniently missing during the holiday rush? Not cool, man. This is one of those simple things that you know is important. You've probably heard it your entire life, but now it's up to you. You're a big kid now. Remember, how you do anything is how you do everything. So work those dependability muscles.
