- When you develop your own credibility before a speech, you get to spend a few moments talking about something you know really well. You get to talk about you. Specifically, you get to say what it is that makes you an expert in your topic, and you get to use hard data or facts about yourself. But what exactly do you say? And how do you say it without sounding like you're bragging? Let's start with a brainstorming exercise. Get a piece of paper. Put your name at the top. Then, divide your paper into three columns. If you prefer to use your computer, type in three headings on your screen. Achievements, education and experience. Under achievements, jot down any external authority that points to your expertise. It might be your work title. It might be an award you've won. It might be a company you worked for, your website, a book you wrote, or a client testimonial.
