- At its core humor is about recognition of shifting perspectives. A laugh is a body's way of recognizing that there is more than one way to view a situation. Even the phrases we use when we understand humor indicate that we're seeing things from another vantage point. Phrases like, "I get it." And "I didn't even see that coming." One of the reasons children's comments on a situation are funny to adults is because a child has one point of view on a situation and an adult has a different point of view on the same circumstance. A friend recently told me about her seven year old daughter who was very upset one evening because her father didn't play with her after he came home from work. "Mommy," the little girl said angrily, "Why isn't daddy playing with me like he promised?" "Well, honey," the mother said, "he didn't have time to finish his work during the day." The little girl thought for a minute and asked, "Why don't they just put him into a slower group at work?" Adults laugh…
