Seven types of people to have in your network
- There's a joke about a guy crawling around on a sidewalk under a street lamp. Someone asks him what he's doing and he says he's looking for his keys. A lady asks, "How'd you lose them?" and the guy says, "I tripped on the bridge and dropped them." So she asks, "Why are you looking for the keys over here "under this streetlamp?" He responds, "Because the light is better." Many people approach networking in the same way. They network with people who are easy to network with instead of people who can actually get them what they want. They get together with the same group of former colleagues or references even when they're all so tightly connected that they don't really provide unique access to one another. A good network has weak ties, meaning not everyone in your network is a close friend with you and your other contacts. They come from different communities and provide connections to a broad range of groups. Ideally, you'll have seven kinds of people in your professional network…
