Set the design criteria
As you design your organization, ensure that you design for the future rather than trying to fix the past. Capabilities focus us on the future. This is why capabilities are so important in design thinking. Think of them as the bridge between strategy and organization. What do we mean by capability? Capabilities are what differentiate one organization from another, even though they may be in the same industry, have similar products and services, or serve similar customers. Imagine a soccer team and a basketball team. Both teams have fit athletes passing a ball up and down a field of play. The players may even have some similar competencies. Each one can run fast and quickly switch from offense to defense. As individuals, their core skills may be quite comparable, but as a team, their capabilities couldn't be more different.
