Serving a past employer as an SME

- Prior employers can be easy clients to land. They know your work, they know your expertise. They may be willing to bring you on as a part-time subject matter expert. Make sure you have a clear contract and rates in place before beginning work. They're going to try to get as much value out of you as possible, and do so for as little compensation as they can get away with. A contract gives you the ability to charge a fair rate for the work you do. In most cases the work you do for this client is going to be considered work product that they own. This won't be an opportunity for you to build your intellectual property to build your consulting firm. These clients may revert back to treating you like an employee. Be sure to keep it clear that it's a client-consultant relationship. If they ask you to spend more hours on a project or redo work, be sure you get paid for it.
