Root out assumptions

- Another way to find good questions is to look for hidden assumptions. People have hidden assumptions all the time. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, you need assumptions to be productive. You assume that your coworkers are doing a good job. In general, people assume that you're telling the truth. You don't want to have to second guess and micromanage everything. What you do want to watch out for are assumptions that can get you into trouble. These are the assumptions that might lead to blind spots. They can keep you from exploring interesting questions, or lead the team into groupthink. In general, assumptions have four characteristics. The first is that they're often hidden or unstated. Very few people start sentences by saying, "If we assume this to be true, "then the other thing must be right." The second is that assumptions are usually taken for granted. They may even be seen as commonsense. The third is that they're essential in determining your reasoning or conclusion.…
