- Picture it: you're feeling burned out and anxious. You find yourself scrolling down the page at your favorite online retailer, or maybe something in a store display catches your eye as you walk past. You see something you just have to get. Then suddenly, there's a lift in mood. You feel excited, optimistic even. This, my friends, is retail therapy at its best. Retail therapy is such a cultural norm that it even has its own Wikipedia page and its own cliched slogan. When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping, right? The fact is, according to a TNS global study, a majority of Americans do admit to sometimes shopping with the primary intention of improving their mood.
