Research your audience

- Think about the way you might present to a boardroom full of oil industry executives. It will definitely look and sound different from the way you address a group of college students at a job fair. And that's entirely appropriate you'll want to tailor your opening remarks to match the needs of your audience. Before you speak take steps to understand your audience as thoroughly as you can. As part of your research ask your even host a general open ended question. Here's my favorite. "Tell me everything you can about the audience. "Who are they?" Start with this question and then explore four additional areas. Ask about relevant demographic information. You might ask about gender, age, marital status, income, education, or other demographic indicators. You'll also want to know key business information. Find out about the industries your audience represents or the companies they serve. Discover what level they're at in their careers. Are they students? Interns? Entry level? Mid level?…
