- Physically, humor works by releasing tension in the body. Tension is a physical manifestation of stress, and it turns out that laughter and tension cannot exist in the body at the same time. Picture two people moving a heavy piece of furniture. They're very tense. What if one person starts to laugh? That's right, they have to put the heavy object down. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are other physical benefits of humor. Laughter can increase your intake of oxygen-rich air. This stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles, while increasing the endorphins that are released by your brain. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. In contrast, positive thoughts actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially, more serious illnesses.
