Reframe and resolve age bias
- Do you ever catch yourself thinking or expecting that an older person is going to act or react in a certain way based solely on their age? Or maybe you hear this from one of your younger team members, oh they're not going to remember all the details for this project, or they won't be able to keep up with the rest of the team. Similarly, you may hear someone older express their own limiting beliefs or biased ideas about working with younger people. You may hear them say something like young people expect to receive praise before earning it. A great technique to overcome this problem is called reframing. Reframing is a mindfulness technique that turns a limiting, negative bias, statement or viewpoint into something positive. Reframing age bias requires that you first stop to identify the biased remark and then restate it in a constructive, unbiased way.
