- There is something magical about being part of a hight performing team. High performing product teams come from a place of respect, collaboration and a product vision that the team members approach as missionaries not mercenaries. John Doerr, the founder of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, was the first to use the term missionaries versus mercenaries. His point was that mercenaries are hired guns who will build whatever you tell them to build, but missionaries are obsessed with the product vision. They're on a literal mission to solve real problems for customers. The product team comes together for an undefined length of time and operates best when they feel both ownership over the success of a product as well as commitment to one another. There is no hierarchy in a product team. Not only that but a product team is not a formal part of the company's hierarchy either.
