From the course: Recruiting Veterans
Prerequisites for this course
- There are a few things you should know before you watch this course. First, not all veterans are the same, or have had the same military experience. While there are many similarities in the work they might do, the differences between roles and responsibility, military branches, years of service and actual duties are quite varied. In this course, I'm going to paint with somewhat of a broad brush based on my many, many years of working with the military communities, and having coached hundreds of active duty service members and veterans. And being counsel to companies who are actively building robust veteran hiring programs. I certainly do not mean to represent the experience of every veteran, but the commonalities and recommendations I will talk about are shared by many, many others. Please know that while your experience or feelings about hiring former military might feel different from what I describe, that difference is also quite common to others. In my training and teaching, I hear the similar fears and challenges and opportunities shared by hiring managers, senior leaders and veterans. Yet, they all believe their experience is unique. Much of what we will discuss is designed to build awareness of the opportunities, share tools and resources commonly used by successful veteran-committed companies and highlight those areas for improvement. As you watch this course, note the questions you have, or the ideas that this stimulates for you. Your success in this area is dependent on identifying the challenges as well as identifying the opportunities for growth.
