So, as you're preparing for your review, the first thing I want you to do, is to know the review schedule. I'm referring to the published time table that was provided by your boss from the HR department. I know that every organization handles the review process differently. But almost all better performing or more mature organizations will publish a schedule. Get your hands on it and read it. If you have any questions at all about what's due, to whom, and when, ask now not later.
Next grab whatever calendar you use for work purposes and add in all relevant due dates from the review schedule. Then, you've got to realize you have many demands on your time, not just preparing for this review. What you have to avoid is waiting until a day or two before something is due on the schedule, because it's common that some other emergency will pop up. Forcing you to turn in some portion of your evaluation late, and it's never good to turn in evaluation related materials late.
That's why you're going to take the schedule and compare it to your current workload. Think through all current tasks and projects. And any and all upcoming milestones. Be sure they're clearly listed on the calendar. So that you can predict where your highest workloads will be. Then, I want you to actively curve out time on the calendar, to get all review preparation work done. Here's a challenge. On the calendar while you're planning your prep. Plan to have your work done for each milestone one week early.
This is important. You have to schedule all of them to be done early, because your plan will change. Life changes every day and there's nothing you can do about it. For a vital task like your performance review. The best thing you in the face of this reality is to pad the schedule. Add in extra time, in anticipation of the unexpected events that will pop up in your schedule. Okay, now that you've got your schedule properly structured, it's time to think a bit more about the specific tasks in front of you.
