- Even though you've just spent a lot of time writing that speech, you're probably not going to read it. Nothing puts an audience to sleep faster than a write-and-read speech with a monotone. Instead, you're going to speak it to the audience and make it sound extemporaneous. How? With easy-to-read speaking notes. Use a keyword or phrase outline. You may want to write the entire introdcution and ending, your key points, statistics that you want to be sure you cite correctly, and even highlight when you want to emphasize a word or use a particular hand motion. Write in "pause" or "emphasize". Should those speaking notes be on a sheet of paper or on note cards? There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods. You need to practice to learn what works best for you. Whichever you use, it should not be distracting to the audience. Don't hold up the sheet of paper or shuffle the card deck.
