- The average American's number one fear is public speaking. Next on that list is death. Jerry Seinfeld, a famous comedian, jokes that this means if you're at a funeral you'd rather be the person in the casket than the one giving the eulogy. All jokes aside, the anxiety associated with public speaking is very common. In fact, there's a medical term for this fear, glossophobia.
