- Have you noticed that the first thing you don't do in writing a speech is write the speech? Planning the speech before writing will make writing the speech much easier. So let's continue that planning. So now you know your Topic, the Specific Purpose of your speech, and the Thesis or main idea. The next decision that has to be made is what Organizational Pattern to use. Informative speeches generally use a Time, Space, or Topic Organizational Pattern. You aren't asking your audience to do anything. You just want to give them information. Let's look at those three patterns. First, the time or chronological order. This pattern is used when you want to show a logical time sequence. You discuss your main points by when they occurred, usually the events farthest away, ending with the most recent. For example, the dog as a pet topic. Your first main topic could be the dog's needs when it's a puppy. Then the second main point could focus on the dog's adult needs, and finally, the third…
