- Here's something cool. Through job design, you're contributing to the bigger picture, organizational design. So, as you design jobs and update job descriptions, it's important to keep that bigger picture in mind. Let's look at some ways your organization might be designed. Your organization is functionally designed if people are grouped together based on job function, such as marketing, sales, operations, and so on. A divisional structure organizes the company by location, with each location comprised of its own functional structures. Offices in different cities would all have their own marketing, operations, and finances departments, for example. Often found in small businesses, a simple structure has few or no levels of management. This type of structure provides for increased employee involvement in the decision-making process.
