- In my view, two of the most critical traits that separates the successful sales professional from the average one is how they handle organization and time management. This is especially true for the remote field sales representative who can be pulled in many different directions. One aspect of being a field representative that many find so attractive is the freedom to set your own schedule without the structure of sitting at a corporate office environment. For me, as a new salesperson, that was my greatest learning curve. I was trained quickly on the steps of the sales process, covering everything from planning and preparation, to asking for the business, but I think I really would have benefited with a class on how to organize my job based in the field. With the home office right down the hallway, you could run the risk of being on call seven days a week if you're not careful.
