- Now you really are ready to begin writing the speech and your next step is to find what works for you, and there's good news: the actual writing of the speech, assuming you followed all the steps for getting ready to write, is the least time consuming part of preparing your speech. You may decide that the detailed outline is sufficient for you to start practicing. If you do decide to write word for word, then think about oral language as you write. Write as if you are explaining, telling, or showing something to someone. Picture a real person across the table from you or looking at you from your computer screen. Write what you'd say as if you were talking directly to that imaginary person. Consider saying everything out loud before you write it. Maybe one of your next steps is to record a draft so that you can hear how it sounds. You may later use the recorded version to help you draft.
