New manager foundations
(upbeat music) - Being a new manager can be a little scary. But it doesn't have to be that way. I'm Dr. Todd Dewett, author of New Manager Fundamentals. I explain everything you need to get started, and it's all about building great rapport. The first task is establishing your identity. Now you're not trying to be friends with everyone. Positivity, yes. But friendship isn't the goal. So most of your conversations should be focused on work, not personal issues. Another vital behavior is proactive communication. Remember, it's not just what you say that matters. You have to anticipate the need for conversation. Read others' reactions while you're speaking. And ask for their input when you see them react. Last but not least, you have to use authority correctly. You need to build rapport, but you also need to make decisions and hold people accountable. The key is not using your authority to dictate. It's really about collaboration. Turns out the more you collaborate, the more they're willing to listen to you when you do need to give orders. There's a lot more to cover, many more practical tips and techniques in the course. I look forward to helping you become a successful new manager. (upbeat music)
