Measuring HR efficiency and impact
- So far, we've been looking at metrics based on the employee life cycle. So let's shift gears and look at other metrics specifically related to HR functioning. One important metric is HR-to-staff ratio. A good average to shoot for is three full-time HR people per 100 employees. Other metrics involve the time to accomplish different tasks such as time to process payroll or vacation time and time to respond to email inquiries from employees. You could also look at the number of calls and types of inquiries you receive about certain programs such as benefits to determine how well you are communicating about them. If you get a lot of inquiries, perhaps you need to rework your marketing. Speaking of benefits, you could also measure benefit program cost per employee by taking the total price of health care costs and dividing it by the number of employees.
