Legally required employee benefits

- Before an employer can issue a paycheck in the US, with few exceptions, it has to provide at least three types of benefits that are required by law, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, and social security. I'd like to help you understand what each of these benefits requires an employer to do. Workers' compensation insurance provides payments to workers who are injured on the job or who contract a work-related illness. It's required by law in all 50 states. The payments cover lost wages, medical treatment and rehabilitation costs, and retraining to perform a different type of work if that becomes necessary. All job-related injuries and illnesses are covered regardless of who caused them. That is, regardless of who was at fault. The actual cost to employers depends on the riskiness of the occupation and the employer's own record of claims. For example, sheet metal workers typically suffer more injuries than office workers.
