- A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to listen to some of the most successful companies in the US talk about their keys to building a successful veteran hiring initiative. Hands down they all said the same thing, start small. When describing programs that failed or floundered, they all pointed to overambitious leaders or poor research and planning as keys to disaster. The successful companies invest time and resources to understand the military culture and the values and have trained their civilian teams to attend to the veterans' emotional and spiritual growth along with their professional aptitude. Of course these companies are concerned with productivity and revenue, but they also invest in the big picture, reminding themselves that Rome wasn't built in a day.
