Keeping control of a meeting

- As a consultant, you're going to run a lot of meetings. People can be disruptive in meetings. If you're facilitating a session, it's easy to lose control of clients especially when they're trying to hijack the agenda. Here are some of my favorite techniques for regaining control of an out-of-control meeting. You can use a parking lot approach. A lot of times people just want to be heard. They may bring up a point that's a big concern to them that isn't really relevant to the meeting. Create a space on a white board or on a flip chart and just write parking lot. When somebody brings up one of those points, go over to the parking lot, write it down, ask the person have I captured your concern, and when they say yes, say that's great. We can come back to that later. Let's get back to the agenda. People then know they've been heard, and they can release that concern.
