Humor as a spotlight

- Using humor as a spotlight is a means to either bring attention to yourself or away from something else. If there's an uncomfortable topic, disease, a company reorg, or inappropriate behavior, for example, then the spotlight can actually serve as a distraction. Let's say a company is going through a change in leadership. A new vice president is coming in. Naturally, people might be worried about what changes will impact the organization. The general sense of nervousness might prompt certain individuals to deflect from dealing with such an uncomfortable situation. When one of the executives says, "I'm going to meet "with the new boss tomorrow, does anyone have "any questions they'd like me to ask her?" Rather than asking something like, "Are our jobs safe?", someone might call out, "Ask her "if we can still have Fridays off!" Imagine elementary school kids with a substitute teacher. Another form of spotlight seeker might take shape as that person who feels the need to comment on…
