How to get managers to take control of their learning

- A number of years ago, I attended a three day workshop on developing leaders. My biggest takeaway happened within the first hour of the program. I've learned that training isn't something you do to people. You can't push people into learning. The real transformation happens when people take control of their own learning and ask for help. I was reminded of this when I was working with a client, whom we'll call Catherine. Catherine was pouring her heart and soul into creating a world-class learning organization only to find herself rounding up participants to attend many of the offerings. To say she was frustrated would be an understatement. I told Catherine that she needed to stop rounding up the troops as though they were kindergartners refusing to return from recess. I also pointed out that even if she was successful in filling the room that didn't mean those in attendance would be fully present.
