How to ask for referrals

- Has anyone ever asked to take you to coffee and pick your brain? Usually, the asker doesn't mean to be rude. They're actually trying to ask for your help or for an introduction, and want to make their request seem friendly. But what they're really saying and what I wish they would just say is, "Robbie, can you help me as a favor for free?" Because the thing is, a cup of coffee for an hour of time isn't really a fair trade-off. The currency in such exchanges is actually goodwill and strong relationships. If they don't have a relationship with you, a coffee will not be enough to pay for the introduction. If they do have a relationship with you, you'll want to help them, especially if it's easy for you to do. When asking for a referral, you want to do the following. Number one, be direct, like, "John, I have a favor to ask. "I know you know Jane Doe." Number two, show how it benefits both parties. "I understand she's thinking about moving. "As you know, I've been a realtor in the area…
