- One of the best places to ask good questions is to check for missing information. A little bit of missing information can significantly change the story. Sometimes the data is incomplete. Other times the person intentionally left out the data because it tells a different story. You see this a lot with advertising. Take a very common advertisement. You may have heard the popular claim that four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum. That seems like a pretty strong show of support. Yet, there's a bit of information that's missing. A well placed question can change the whole story. What do dentists generally tell their patients about chewing gum? Maybe a 100% of dentists tell their patients to never chew gum. Of those maybe 10% of patients insist that they cannot give up the habit. So, for that 10% the majority of dentists say, "If you insist on chewing gum, "then at least make sure it's sugarless."
