Global and cultural effectiveness
- Organizations are becoming increasingly global, largely because of the internet. MIT professor and internet activist, Ethan Zuckerman, says that "there is no locality on the web, "every market is a global market." This is why competence in global and cultural effectiveness is an integral part of the HR practice and is one of the three competencies that make up the interpersonal cluster of the SHRM-CP. This cluster accounts for 18 1/2% of the questions on the exam. To remain competitive companies need employees to develop a global mindset or the ability to adopt a perspective that's inclusive of diverse cultures and viewpoints. A global mindset begins with understanding your own cultural norms and how those norms have shaped your values. Culture is a set of shared beliefs, social norms, and material traits of a large group.
