- A recent Gallup survey found that over 80% of employees see their leaders as uninspiring. But 70% of leaders rate themselves exactly the opposite. They think they are inspiring. They're in the same organizations, but live in different worlds, why? Three big blockages can prevent leaders from understanding how they're really perceived. First, the intent-impact gap. We tend to judge ourselves based on our intent, but others tend to evaluate us based on impact, the effect our behaviors have on them. There's often a difference, sometimes a huge difference between how we want to affect others and how we actually do affect them. Second, deference to authority. It's a general tendency to play it safer around authority figures, defer to them, try not to get on their bad side. So people often avoid giving leaders critical feedback. Third, blind spots.
