One of your core jobs as a leader is to help people feel purpose in their work. Many people merely tolerate their jobs. They know they have to work, they feel the boss is basically fair, and even though they're not in love with what they do, they comply with the demands of the job. They tolerate it. What a depressing reality. No matter how much, or how little someone inherently loves the work they do for you, I want you to know that you have significant power to help them experience purpose. By purpose, I mean a positive sense of doing something that matters. Something that adds value. Something that makes you feel good when you're done. With the right boss and the right team, any job can be filled with purpose. Give your employees purpose by following these three guidelines. First, start thinking a little more flexibly about how to fit people into roles.
