Expanding your humor skill set

- You've learned that humor is a cognitive skill, and that your proficiency at this skill can be increased through an awareness of what you do and with practice. You don't need to aspire to become a professional stand-up comedian in order to become more active with your sense of humor. Here are five steps to help you accomplish this. One, learn to laugh at yourself. This is a great starting point for developing your sense of humor. By learning to lighten up on yourself, you accomplish several goals. First, you don't have to worry about picking the wrong target for your humor. Second, you're using the same approach as professional comedians and humorists, who use their own lives and experiences to search for truths and incongruities. The key here is don't take yourself too seriously. Celebrate your individuality and your foibles. Learn to laugh with compassion at yourself and the things you do. Two, laugh at others.
