The best way to start working with a recruiter is to have them come to you. You should be using your networking and online profile to attract the attention of recruiters. However, if that doesn't work, you can approach recruiters directly. You will want to have a good strategy in place. The first thing you want to think about the timing of your approach. You want to establish a relationship with a recruiter before you need them. Whether right or wrong, recruiters look for people that are currently employed and happy with their careers. You want to approach them while you are still employed but thinking about leaving your position. Approach them as if you are interviewing them for your next move, and if they will be the right fit for your search.
