- Mentoring is a natural fit for older workers with years of experience and best practices to share. It also serves as a built-in training and professional development program for your team. Mentoring is also empowering for the mentor just as much as the mentee. And if your report has been having challenges around building relationships with younger team members, mentoring may be a great option. Remember that mentoring doesn't necessarily involve teaching a specific skill or procedure. It's about supporting someone through their own learning process and using interpersonal skills to help them overcome obstacles. If your older report is using their mentoring sessions to teach or preach to their mentee, remind them that this process is about letting the mentee find their own answers, not about dictating any particular right way.
