- A very important message in this course is about the importance of innovating through people because that's where innovation happens. Ideas come out of people's heads. I had an experience several years ago that really stood out and taught me a really good lesson. Here's what happened. We were facilitating a group of about 12 people. We were generating ideas for a medical device, a small item called an IV catheter, and boy, the first two days we were just crushing it. I mean, creating amazing new ideas for this type of device. But then, all of a sudden, the leader of this team walks into the workshop and says, "I have a very important announcement to make. "Our division has just been sold to another company," and all of a sudden I could see with my own eyes the (imitates deflating balloon), the energy in everybody just went out of them, and they could not come up with ideas after that, no matter how hard we tried.
